Indian Women and Casual Sex: No More a Taboo
Sex, I would say is the most overrated subject in human life, as a result of which it has attained a great importance amongst the youth. Cultural or traditional values are no more an obstacle in the fulfilment of one’s sexual desires. India has been a country with great deal of respect for its customs and heritage. Sex has been considered sacred only when had within the bounds of marriage. Even though questions haven’t been raised on Indian men’s sexual escapades, women have been given the responsibility of maintaining society’s cultural values. But the contemporary Indian women have redefined this entire concept of casual sex being a taboo which marks the process of social transformation.
The slang that sex on-the-side gives her much required kick, says a lot about the new class of Indian women. Urban India is moving with a frantic pace, and this is evident in the trend of casual sex catching up with the current youth. An intimate relation established between a man and a woman without any bounds of future commitments is called as casual sex.
Most of the women are now free spirited with the thought of one night stand or consummation without any allegiance. Surveys conducted to know the thoughts of women for or against casual carnal engagements have yielded surprising results. To quote a few (identities withheld):
“It’s not about being promiscuous, but having sex with a stranger can actually lift your mood”
“I am okay with the idea of casual sex, it’s easy, stress free, no feelings of jealousy or being tied down.”
“Most women in my age group color their one night stands. I don’t know a single girl who willingly says she is okay with one night stands, fearing judgment from other women. Perhaps younger women are more open to the idea.”
Factors which act as a catalyst to this open mindedness are the hassle free availability of 72 hours abortion pills, hole proof condoms and needless to say, the anonymity that the big cities provide one with. Women, sexually adventurous,
would assert in calling this indulgence in casual sex as a step towards female liberation and is rated as a feel good factor.
But this thought of an unceremonious sexual indulgence is not really acceptable to an equal number of women in the current Indian society. Anticipation of such carnal desires and actually stepping onto this path are two different things. And this group of women shuns such a practice. Psychologists have stated the following as some reasons for Indian women’s indulgence in the casual sex:
- Peer pressure,
- Lack of faith in oneself and
- For some, a session in bed with a stranger is a way to kill the ennui in one’s life.
Casual sex has ironically been synonymized with emotional food binging. This is to say, that involving in too much eating due to emotional lows and into spontaneous sex are alike. I wouldn’t judge this as a good or a bad move, but it is a step which deserves some concrete thinking.
